Understanding Your Benefits

VA Disability vs. Social Security Disability

These are two separate programs that can work together. Understanding the differences can help you maximize your benefits.

VA Disability Compensation

  • Service-Connection Required - Must prove your disability is related to military service
  • Tax-Free Monthly Payment - Based on disability rating (0-100%)
  • Vocational Rehab - May include job training and employment assistance
  • Healthcare - VA medical benefits for service-connected conditions
  • Survivor Benefits - Benefits available to surviving spouses and children

Social Security Disability (SSDI)

  • Work-Based Eligibility - Must have sufficient work credits (usually 5 of last 10 years)
  • Total Disability Required - Cannot do substantial work due to medical condition
  • Taxed Benefits - May be subject to federal income tax
  • Medicare After 2 Years - Become eligible for Medicare after receiving SSDI for 24 months
  • Family Benefits - Eligible family members may receive benefits

The Good News: You Can Receive Both!

VA disability compensation and SSDI are NOT mutually exclusive. Many veterans successfully receive benefits from both programs. Having one does NOT disqualify you from the other. In fact, the combined benefits can provide significantly more financial support.

Closing the Gap

A Critical Gap in Veteran Support

Through both professional experience and personal exposure to the veteran community. We have come to recognize a consistent gap—many veterans who are pursuing VA disability benefits, awaiting ratings, or living with significant service-connected conditions may also qualify for Social Security disability benefits, yet they are often not provided with clear guidance on how these systems differ, how they intersect, or when it makes sense to pursue both.

The VA and Social Security Administration (SSA) are two completely separate systems with different eligibility requirements, benefit amounts, and application processes. Many veterans receive VA compensation but are unaware they may also be eligible for SSDI benefits.

Our goal is to help close that gap by providing practical, accessible education and support so that veterans are not left trying to navigate another complex system on their own.
